SMIP recruits semiannually at the start of each semester, and selected applicants must pass an interview to get in. And it’s definitely worth it! From their first day, students are trained to be inquisitive analysts. According to the website, “SMIP refines and develops member’s financial analysis skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills, and their ability to effectively and efficiently report pertinent info about the portfolio.”

Maria Alvarez (‘23) joined SMIP last semester because she felt it was a great opportunity to educate herself about investing and to connect with other knowledgeable people. She notes, “One of the things I love about SMIP is the way you form connections with people.” Since many finance concepts are put into practice during the meetings, being a part of the club has also helped her prepare for classes.

On top of the rich debate and projects that SMIP members are involved in, SMIP provides a variety of top-notch networking opportunities. Guest speakers from prominent private equity firms to Fortune 500 companies have come in to meet the group and share more about their career experiences. Additionally, the SMIP alumni network is vast and filled with people who are eager to help you out. Olivia Sever (‘23), co-lead for the Energy sector, states, “I have been able to make new connections with professionals in the industry, which has given me many opportunities outside of school.”

The Student Managed Investment Portfolio is one of the best clubs at VCU and is open to students of all majors from pre-med to marketing.
